On-board diagnostics is a requirement for real vehicle fleet management.

Prova's on-board diagnostic (OBD-2) systems provide up-to-the-minute tracking of individual vehicles and overall vehicle fleet health. The systems monitor and record actual engine activity every second and report that back to the fleet management platform to record actual vehicle usage statistics, real mileage and speed history, accurate idle times, engine diagnostic codes (DTCs) and driver behavior metrics.  AVL GPS systems make their best guesses at these metrics since they're observing the vehicle from 12,000 miles.

AVL/GPS systems and diagnostic systems can interoperate to raise the quality of fleet management.

Many fleets have multiple operational footprints: some vehicles need live vehicle tracking to optimize dispatch and delivery services while other vehicles need maintenance schedule tracking as their core priority.  In many fleets driver behavior tracking is also a requirement.
